[Lips starts quivering and eyes start tearing up. There is so much shame here right now. She figured Violet would help her feel better, but hadn't accounted for the feeling of letting her down.]
I'm not good at school, and...I messed up a lot...I'm really dumb, Violet...[At this point she puffs out her cheeks, trying desperately not to try and to keep the negative feelings at bay if possible.]
Oh, I'm sorry, dear. I didn't realize... [She places a gentle hand on Ayano's shoulder.]
But I know you're not dumb, Nono. You're really bright and curious. That's as true now as it was when I first got to meet you. People just learn in different ways, and school just doesn't teach you in a way that works best to how you learn, that's all. So please, don't put yourself down like that.
[Violet pulls out a small handkerchief and offers it to Ayano. She finds it's handy to have something on hand to blot out the tears just for occasions like this.]
And don't think you can fool me by making that face, Nono. If you need to cry, cry as much as you need to. I still think your school is in the wrong here. I myself might want to go in there and give them a piece of my mind!
[She sniffles again and wipes her eyes, mouthing a soft, inaudible "thank you"]
Th-That's what my Dad says, he says I'm not cut out for normal school...And he said he should've pushed to send me to a special arts academy or something, and that it was his fault, and not mine, but it's totally mine and I made my Dad sad and, and and...
[Ayano brings her knees up onto the chair with her and hugs them.]
We tried everything, but there's nothing the school can do...[Wipes her eyes again, with a gross noise coming out of her nose to boot.]
Really. Do you remember the year that I caught the flu right at the beginning of summer? Well, I was supposed to graduate that weekend. I'd been looking forward to that day all year - I couldn't wait to hear them call my name. To see all my friends, and my love, walk on that stage and end that chapter of our lives. [She cups her hand over her face to hide the flush creeping over her cheeks.] I cried that whole weekend. It was a real sight when they came to see me the next day! [She sighs and lowers her hand.]
I know this situation is a little more complicated than what I went through - though I promise you that you didn't make your father sad - but I definitely understand the feeling of not being able to share those memories with the people you care about. Nono, if there's one thing you take away from this, just remember that one day can't compare with the years of memories you've already made with your friends - with Jude - and the years that are still to come. A part of me wishes I had the chance to celebrate that day with everyone, but I know in my heart that the time I've spent with them, and with you, and Jude, and Minato, more than make up for what I missed out on back then. [She covers her face, again and chuckles softly.]
